Sketchbook

A collection of images taken from my various sketchbooks (and of varying quality), loosely grouped by theme or project. Mostly pencil and fountain pen.

'Delivery' Materials

Other sketches or art of the Driver not related to the actual comics.

Driver Sizzle Reel
Little set of doodles to show the atmosphere. Pen. 'Lemur Concepts'
Brainstorming more refined designs for the feral lemurs in 'Layover'. Pen.

'Outlier Accounts' Materials

ANOTHER long-form comic I intend to develop. Higher on the list than the Warlock story, but taking a backseat to the Delivery stuff. It will involve a number of shorter narratives linked by a common thread.

'Samurai, Future 1'
An action shot of a futuristic swordsman. Pen. 'Samurai, Future 2'
Concept for a futuristic swordsman in a minimalistic training room. Pencil. 'Thrive Concepts 1'
A sentient mass of fungus that feeds off of radiation, wrapped around the corpse of a dead astronaut. In this concept it is bound within a body suit that lets it flow out from the 'forearms', perhaps at the start of a battle. Pencil. 'Thrive Concepts 2'
Brainstorming appearances for this character. 'Buggles' is my nickname for it. Pencil. 'Thrive Concepts 3'
This image depicts a potential moment in the story before its containment, when it first bursts out of the spacesuit. Pencil. 'Planetkiller Concept'
Just a mini-brainstorm for this character's story. An alien race linked and enslaved to a sentient planet. The main character was born with a tiny chance of escape. Marker. 'Etchi, Future 1'
His species is functionally immortal, but the brutal nature of their planet leads to an average life expectancy not disimilar from our own. Pencil. 'Etchi, Future 2'
Hundreds of years after escaping he wanders the galaxy, searching for a way to come back home and finally liberate his people from a living hell. Pencil. 'Channeler, Future 1'
A young woman summons a lance of undulating black energy. Pencil. 'Channeler, Future 2'
A spike of darkness shoots from one side of her head down to her hand, where a disquieting mass begins to build. It seems to be causing her pain. (I like this one.) Pencil. 'Monster Concepts'
Design brainstorming for the monster haunting Sarah (a character in a story concept I'm working on). It's supposed to appear only as a shadowy face to her, while its true form exists in another dimension. Digital.

'Warlock at Large' Materials.

Sketches and brainstorming for a long-form comic that won't be top priority for a while, though I'm pretty invested in the idea.

'Droutish Tank'
An armored vehicle from the country of Drout. From the project 'Warlock at Large' I've been developing off and on. Pen. 'Thorn 1'
Not my favorite, but showing off her signature gourd and cloak she uses in combat. The third member of the small scale insurgency team. Pen. 'Insurgency Team 1'
The small scale insurgency team are a trio of agents from the Chimera Forest. Two of them are pictured here: Jalla Moondrop, left (confronting the bandaged mercenary), and Mossfinger, right. They fight with specialized plants, some integrated with their bodies. Pencil. 'Mossfinger and Rollo'
Early concepts based on the original thumbnails (Characters 1). Mossfinger uses vines embedded in his flesh to travel quickly and spread a variety of dangerous flora. Rollo is a bandit of the desert who wears the scent organ of a giant firefly around his head. Pen. 'Ships and More Rollo'
This world has roughly WW1-level technology, intermixed with strange magical elements. Some vehicles might float via flight sacs harvested from the massive insects populating the skies, while others may use the power of a dozen monks' focused belief (possibly with a series of great prayer drums? I'm still working on it). Rollo can fly by taming the wild firebugs that live in the desert. They think he's their mom. Pen. 'Thorn and the Bandaged Mercenary'
Early concepts for Thorn and the other one (no real name yet but I like her) based on their thumbnails (Female Characters 2). The mercenary most likely works for the Droutish Empire. 'Thorn 2'
Some more concepts for Thorn. The whole team needs more work but I like how they're coming together. Thorn uses a pair of plants she's attuned to: Her cloak of thorns, which protects her automatically from nearby threats, and the gourd of creation, a family heirloom that can produce a number of items based on the collected knowledge of its previous bearers. She uses it mainly for swords. Pencil.

Creature Design Materials

Sketches and brainstorming I did whilst prepping for the monthly challenges on the Creature Design Workshop Discord server. Some were never submitted because I couldn't arrive at a satisfying final product, which I intend to remedy at some point in the future.

'Ark of Man BS 1'
The initial thumbnails I made for the prompt that would eventually turn into the 'Ark of Man' piece. Pen. 'Ark of Man BS 2'
Idea developed quickly after I chose a direction. These sketches specifically got cut together to form the final images. Pen. 'Ark of Man BS 3'
Gave it hands for a bit which worked okay. 'Ark of Man BS 4'
Some sketches here of what the original hermits who performed the ritual may have looked like. Pen. 'Ark of Man BS 5'
Still experimenting with different designs. Pen. 'Ark of Man BS 6'
Spent some time on a couple of these, but didn't end up liking how they came out. 'Furzschlange BS'
Some sketches for a creature I never submitted. The prompt asked for a very fast creature that attacks with fire, but I missed that the setting was supposed to be a mystical forest. The 'furzschlange' is an alien beast discovered by German researchers that can suck in flammable gasses from the atmosphere and expel them in a cone of flames from bone nozzles on either side of its jaw. 'Fruzschlange' should roughly translate to 'Fart Snake'. Pen. 'Pit Stalker BS 1'
For this prompt I needed to envision a creature's evolution over a few million years after a massive world-wide flood takes place. I started by first coming up with the original creature, an ape-like predator that lived near tar pits, using long arms to reach stuck prey and a prehensile tail to anchor itself to the ground or nearby trees. Looking back, I think I preferred these sketches to the final, evolved version. Pen. 'Pit Stalker BS 2'
This was the final version of the ancestor creature I based the final version on. Again, I feel like I took the 'safer' path here and it's a little boring to me despite looking okay. Pencil.

Miscellaneous Characters

Thumbnail sketches and random portraits. Some of these became more developed designs later.

'Female Characters 1'
I'll do themed pages of thumbnails sometimes. For this one I tried to do like 20 or so female-only character sketches, and what you see here is the ones I liked the most compiled into a pleasing showcase. Yes, I know the snake woman has boobs, I've learned to live with the choices I've made. Pen. 'The Hatmaker'
An old man with strange powers, he seeks hats and helms and will behead their wearer for them if need be. Pen. 'Characters 1'
No specific theme for these thumbnails, but some of them may appear later as slightly more developed concepts. Pen. 'Characters 2'
A variety of odd folks. Pen. 'Female Characters 2'
Another themed page. I've found these to be really fun and effective for creating characters that I find interesting. Pen. 'Fun With Color'
Some portraits where I used colored pens/brushes to add mostly monochromatic touches to pen drawings with bold black backgrounds to give contrast. Pens, various.

Various Studies

'Assorted Animals 1'
Based on photos sourced from quickposes.com. Pen. 'Assorted Animals 2'
More from quickposes.com. Pen. 'Assorted Animals 3'
Apes and birds are a lot of fun. Pen. 'Sparrow Study 1'
If I do it right, these little guys come out cute as hell. Pen. 'Fencing 1'
I did a number of fencing studies as practice for action shots. Pen. 'Fencing 2'
Some of these are my personal favorite drawings of humans in motion (so far). Pen. 'Fencing 3'
I mainly used Sakura micron pens for these. Pen. 'Fencing 4'
I do some editing with a handful of the pages here just to make them read better, and to occasionally hide embarassing scribbles. Pen. 'Fencing 5'
This piece should perhaps be in the 'Finished Works' page, since it's a bit more complete looking than the others. That's sort of subjective though, I think. Pen.

Extra Lil' Comic Stuff

The comics and ideas I don't have time for yet but still entertain me.

'Yoshi, A Serious Dog'
There's a little dog I know who deserves a comic about him someday. Pen. 'Supers 1'
I drew this and the second page in one day and it shows. It's pretty much just a DBZ parody, but I think it's funny. Pen. 'Supers 2'
I KNOW the clownish guy's design is peak. Cindy needs work. Cut me some slack, it was in pen and I was at work lol. (Pen).

Tiny Places

Most of these are small sketched environments I blew up for viewing, which has been fun.

'Cliff City'
Little dwellings on the sides of a chasm. Pen. 'Odd Complex'
Just a weird, surreal space. Pen and some pencil.
